The Cloud Engineer position is an exciting opportunity for an IT professional to join our team supporting the unique needs of our public sector clients. This role focuses on deploying, operating, and improving a secure, modern, and resilient AWS-based cloud platform. You’ll work in technically complex, compliance-driven environments and own infrastructure projects from planning through delivery and operational handoff.

Your challenges and objectives:

• Develop deep knowledge of Avature’s infrastructure, operational processes, and compliance requirements.
• Design, build, and maintain AWS infrastructure across production and development environments with security and resilience as primary objectives.
• Improve reliability and operational consistency through Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and configuration management (Puppet/Ansible).
• Own and execute complex initiatives end-to-end: requirements gathering, technical design, implementation, validation, documentation, and transition to steady-state operations.
• Build professional relationships with our partners, supporting the strategic alignment of our cloud solutions with their unique needs.
• Collaborate with global colleagues in a diverse, interconnected working environment.

Your day-to-day activities:

• Operate and support AWS-hosted infrastructure and services, working primarily in Linux environments.
• Administer Linux systems: user/service management, patching, hardening, troubleshooting, performance analysis, and automation.
• Build and maintain Terraform modules and workflows to provision and manage cloud resources safely and repeatably.
• Implement and maintain configuration management using Puppet or Ansible to ensure a consistent system state and reduce drift.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across compute, storage, networking, identity/access, and application dependencies; drive root cause analysis and implement preventative fixes.
• Participate in platform improvements and operational maturity efforts (runbooks, standards, change implementation, automation, and resilience improvements).
• Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure service continuity, respond to incidents, and lead technical resolution efforts during off-hours when needed.
• Support the adoption of new tools and technologies to meet evolving public sector and compliance requirements.

About you:

• US government security clearance eligibility is required. Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain a US government security clearance.
• Experience deploying, operating, and troubleshooting core AWS services.
• Experience with Linux as an everyday operating system (preferred), as well as experience with Linux system administration.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices (version control, peer review, modular design, state management, safe change practices).
• Experience with configuration management, such as Puppet (or equivalent).
• Comfortable working in technically complex environments.
• Ability to complete complex projects from beginning to end with minimal supervision (planning, execution, and operationalization).
• Exposure to private or public cloud platform development using current DevOps practices such as Containerization, Configuration Management, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Experience with specific technologies such as Terraform, Docker, Puppet, or Kubernetes is a plus.
• Experience or strong interest in programming and automation, with a focus on creating efficient and streamlined processes, and a desire to eliminate repetitive tasks.
• Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills—able to break down ambiguous problems, prioritize hypotheses, and resolve issues under pressure.
• Willingness to work within business hours in the EST time zone.
